== SUMMARY ==
After viral videos of mis-taken orders — bacon on ice cream, hundreds of dollars of chicken nuggets — McDonald's ended its IBM automated drive-thru order pilot.
== DESCRIPTION ==
McDonald's and IBM had tested AI voice order-taking in more than 100 US drive-thrus since 2021. Through 2024 customers posted videos of the system adding bacon to ice cream and running up orders of hundreds of chicken nuggets, with staff unable to intervene quickly. On 17 June 2024 McDonald's told franchisees it would end the global partnership and switch the system off by 26 July 2024. IBM said the technology remained viable for other clients and that other work with McDonald's would continue.
== ROOT CAUSE ==
Speech recognition and intent understanding failed in noisy drive-thru conditions, and orders were committed without adequate verification or easy human override.
== MITIGATION ==
McDonald's terminated the pilot and shut the system off, and said it would evaluate other voice-ordering partners.
